The Season Between Pages: Finding Your September Reading Mood
September always feels a little like standing in a doorway.
Summer isn't quite finished, but fall has started leaving little hints everywhere. The mornings are cooler. The days are getting shorter. School is back in session. Pumpkin-flavored everything has begun its annual takeover. And somewhere between the last beach read and the first spooky story, I find myself wanting to read something that feels a little different.
September is a transition month, and I think our reading can be transitional too.
Maybe you're ready for something atmospheric and a little dark. Maybe you want a story that feels cozy enough to curl up with while the weather changes outside. Or maybe you're not ready for fall at all and need one more book that feels like summer.
There isn't a wrong answer.
So, what kind of reader are you this September?
If you're craving something atmospheric...
This is the perfect time for books with old houses, mysterious libraries, complicated families, forgotten histories, and secrets tucked into the walls. September has just enough darkness creeping into the evenings to make an atmospheric mystery feel appropriate.
If you want cozy...
Reach for the book equivalent of your favorite sweater. Give me charming towns, found family, a little romance, something delicious to eat, and a story that leaves me feeling better than when I started it.
If you're ready for spooky season...
You don't have to wait until October.
September is an excellent month for easing into darker reads. Start with something unsettling rather than terrifying. A little gothic atmosphere. A strange house. A mysterious disappearance. Maybe a story that makes you question what you would do if the ordinary suddenly became very, very strange.
If you're not ready to let summer go...
That's okay too.
There is no literary law requiring you to read autumnal books simply because someone put a pumpkin on a porch.
Keep reading the romance. Finish the fantasy series. Pick up the big adventure you've been saving. Summer doesn't have to end just because the calendar says September.
A new season for The Velvet Bookmark Collective
September is also bringing some exciting things to The Velvet Bookmark Collective.
I'll be popping up at several events around the Dayton area, bringing along a carefully curated selection of books, including new releases, used treasures, Ohio authors, indie authors, and some wonderfully unusual finds.
I'm also continuing to build out the experiences that make The Velvet Bookmark Collective more than just a place to buy a book.
From Blind Dates with a Book to Immersive Reading Boxes and literary gatherings, I'm interested in creating spaces where books become part of the experience rather than simply something sitting on a shelf.
Because sometimes the best part of a book isn't just reading it.
It's finding the right book at exactly the right moment.
It's discovering an author you've never heard of.
It's talking about a story with someone who loved it for completely different reasons.
It's sitting somewhere beautiful with a drink, a book, and nowhere else you need to be.
That's the kind of reading life I want to build.
What are you reading this September?
Whatever your reading mood is right now, I hope you give yourself permission to follow it.
You don't have to read what's trending.
You don't have to finish the book you're forcing yourself through.
You don't have to read a certain number of books this month.
You just need a story that makes you want to turn the page.
And if you aren't sure what that story is yet, that's where I come in.
Tell me what you're looking for, and I'll help you find your next read.
After all, there's probably a book out there with your name on it.
You just haven't met it yet.
